The Beckman Scholars Program provides scholarships to advance the education, research training and personal development of outstanding students at the rising Junior or Senior level majoring in chemistry, biochemistry, and/or the biological sciences.
During the Scholar selection process, we consider the intellectual merit of the candidate and the impact of the award on the applicant. We consider applicants who have taken a variety of pathways to higher education studies in STEM, may have overcome financial challenges, lacked access to early education in STEM, and/or who may not have had role models in science who reflected their own experiences.
The selected Beckman Scholars will receive a financial scholarship and must commit to conducting research part-time (10 hours per week) with one of the Beckman Scholars Mentors during the academic year and full-time over two summers (10 weeks each summer).
Support begins in June prior to the Junior or Senior year and the planned program activities are as follows:
First Summer: Summer Research and professional advancement activities
Academic Year Fall/Spring: Honors Colloquia and Travel to a scientific meeting to share research results.
Second Summer: Research presentation at the Beckman Scholars Symposium
