CSU STEM Pathways and Research Alliance (CSU SPaRA)
The California State University STEM Pathways and Research Alliance (CSU-SPaRA) is a CSU-wide program with a goal preparing the next generation of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workers. Undergraduates interested in scientific research should apply to be eligible for Textbook and School Material Reimbursement, Research Support, and Professional Training.
Science Coding Immersion Program (SCIP)
The Science Coding Immersion Program (SCIP) is a remote, 6-week summer program open to SFSU students with little to no coding experience who would like to grow their coding skills in a supportive and flexible environment. SCIP provides the option of learning introductions to the coding languages Python or R, or for those with prior experience, Classical Machine Learning or ImageJ/Fiji Image Processing. SCIP sessions are fully online meetings in groups of 4-7 students where TAs welcome and assign self-guided material for the day and students can work self-paced or with their groups and ask TAs questions anytime. SCIP also includes both professional and critical thinking development opportunities. Weekly career webinars let students hear from and speak with diverse professionals who use coding, learning about their paths into science, their current work applications, and advice from their journeys. Weekly critical studies discussions help students connect coding to lived experiences, current events, and structures and systems in society. The goal of SCIP is to give a warm welcome into programming basics in a low-pressure environment of peers.
How to Join SCIP!
Sign-ups are usually during April and May. Links to sign-up are sent through Biology department websites and flyers on campus. You can also reach out to the SCIP email below and we will send you an invite when they open. Students who have joined SCIP in the past may join multiple years; note students cannot take more than one track at a time during a single summer.
How to TA for SCIP!
Teaching Assistants (TAs) are an important part of SCIP as they are who structure each session and are present throughout for student support. If you have intermediate or above Python or R experience and are interested in growing your mentorship skills as a TA, please reach out to the SCIP email below and let us know about your coding and mentoring experience. The program is remote, ~10 hours per week, and provides a stipend courtesy of SEO. SCIP alumni are encouraged to join.
If you have any questions, please reach out to the SCIP staff
