Travel for SEO Scholars

2026 - 27 Academic Year Conference Travel Funding is limited to $1000/SEO Scholar presenting research at a conference

  • We need AT LEAST 60 days lead time to fund travel. Ideally, let us know as soon as students are submitting abstracts. This allows us to comply with all the University Travel regulations and approval processes. It also helps us to save money so we can fund more students by taking advantage of early bird registration discounts, finding lower-cost airfares, and booking students in rooms close to the conference center.
  • The student or mentor can contact us to request an SEO Travel Request Form. This form will be sent to the student to complete, and requires mentor and Program Director signature.
  • Please help students to put together a budget for the conference that includes registration, airfare, lodging, ground transportation, and meals.
  • If approved by Program Director, SEO can provide a maximum of $1000 for students to attend ONE conference/academic year where they are presenting research. Help your student select the conference that will be most beneficial to their development.
  • Students will likely need to apply for additional support from other sources in order to be fully funded to attend the conference. Please make sure your students are aware of conference travel scholarship opportunities and deadlines.
  • Although students will need to be approved individually for travel, if you are sending (or know of ) a group of students that are attending, 
  • Due to some grant restrictions and administrative barriers, the SEO Office is NOT able to support travel to international conferences.

Student Research Supply Funds

If you need to purchase research supplies for your SEO scholar, please contact your scholar's Program Director with a list and pricing information to determine whether the supply purchase can be funded by SEO.

Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) requirements

All SEO scholars are trained in the responsible conduct of research.

For NSF scholarships (STC CCC) the students have to complete a CITI training form and submit it to ORSP within the first month and then participate in RCR training throughout the year.

For NIH (U-RISE) and privately-funded scholarships the RCR training occurs throughout the year and the forms are due to ORSP in the spring.

NIH Public Access Policy

Effective April 7, 2008 under federal law, NIH requires that the author's final version of any peer-reviewed journal article resulting from NIH-funded activities MUST be submitted to the PubMed Central (PMCID) repository, where it will be made available to the public within 12 months after the journal article is published. If you have any questions about this policy, please contact the SEO Office before your publication goes to press.
